# Use GenderAPI Formulas in Microsoft Excel

> Use GENDER.FROM_NAME, GENDER.FROM_EMAIL and GENDER.FROM_USERNAME in Excel. See parameters, defaults, expanded output order and common setup errors.

## Use the function that matches your input

Install the GenderAPI Excel add-in, save your API key in its sidebar and use GENDER.FROM_NAME, GENDER.FROM_EMAIL or GENDER.FROM_USERNAME. Each function accepts its input first, an optional additional-information flag second and optional country context third.

These are native Excel formulas backed by the legacy API. Google Sheets uses a different GENDER formula signature, and the direct REST V2 API has a separate JSON contract.

## Three arguments, in a fixed order

| Argument | Type | Default | Description |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `name / email / username` | Text or cell reference | Required | The input for the chosen function, such as A2. |
| `enable_additional_info` | Boolean | FALSE | Use TRUE or 1 to return four columns. Omit it or use FALSE/0 for the gender value only. |
| `country` | Text | No country filter | An optional two-letter country code, such as IT, US, DE or TR. Include the second argument when supplying this one. |

**Excel formula examples**

Each line is a separate example. Put the corresponding name, email or username in A2. Formula separators may depend on your Excel locale.

```text
=GENDER.FROM_NAME(A2)
=GENDER.FROM_NAME(A2, TRUE, "IT")
=GENDER.FROM_EMAIL(A2, TRUE)
=GENDER.FROM_USERNAME(A2, FALSE)
```

## Expanded Excel output uses four columns

With additional information disabled, the formula returns the gender value. With it enabled, the documented Excel output is one row containing gender, probability, country and matched name, in that order. Leave the three neighboring cells empty.

The Google Sheets formula lists country before probability; do not reuse its headers without checking the Excel order.

| Position | Excel output | Interpretation |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Gender | A resolved gender or unresolved value. Keep errors separate. |
| 2 | Probability | Legacy confidence signal, not V2 confidence_kind or measured model accuracy. |
| 3 | Country | Returned lookup context, not a verified personal attribute. |
| 4 | Matched name | Review the name used or extracted, particularly for emails and usernames. |

## Check setup errors before filling down

Formula recalculation can submit a new lookup. Copy completed outputs as values when you need a stable snapshot, and keep the original data and review date alongside it.

| Symptom | What to check |
| --- | --- |
| Function not available | Confirm that the add-in is installed and available in this workbook and Excel environment. |
| API key not set | Open the GenderAPI sidebar and save the key. A key in a cell is not the add-in's saved credential. |
| Input is empty | Check the referenced cell and choose the function for its actual input type. |
| Expanded output cannot appear | Clear the required adjacent destination cells without overwriting useful data. |
| Error text or unknown error | Review connectivity, account state and the returned message. Do not treat an operational error as an unresolved prediction. |

## Plan for credits, limits and repeated runs

A registered free GenderAPI account includes 200 credits per day. Credits are an account balance, not a promise of 200 successful results in every workflow. Check the selected key's balance and the tool's current processing options before starting.

Native add-ons and file jobs have their own processing paths. The REST V2 batch limit, AI options and per-request billing fields do not automatically apply to them. A repeated run or recalculation can submit fresh work; do not assume it is free.

Start with a small sample, retain completed results, and review the failed rows before rerunning. If you only need to repair a later export or destination update, reuse the results you already have.

## When to use the direct V2 API

Use a separate HTTP integration when your application needs explicit AI options, per-item status, source, confidence kind and usage information from V2. Follow the V2 request and response contract; adding V2 field names to a native formula or existing add-on does not change that client's behavior.

## Can I use =GENDER(A2) in Microsoft Excel?

The documented Excel add-in functions are GENDER.FROM_NAME, GENDER.FROM_EMAIL and GENDER.FROM_USERNAME. The plain GENDER formula belongs to the Google Sheets add-on.

## How do I supply country without extra output?

Keep the second argument disabled, for example =GENDER.FROM_NAME(A2, FALSE, "IT"). Country is the third argument, not the second.

## What is the default additional-information setting?

It is off when omitted. TRUE or 1 enables the four-column output: gender, probability, country and matched name.

## Do the functions return V2 billing information?

No. The native formulas expose their legacy result fields. Use a separate V2 integration when you need request metadata, source, confidence kind or per-request usage.
